Something Besides Bridge

I got to do something besides bridge today!  I finally had the time to go to the arts and crafts class and I created my very first oil painting.  A sailboat in the Bora Bora lagoon.  I struggled with the concept of oils as the techniques are so diametrically opposed to the watercolor I know how to do.  It was a fun hour in which I forgot about everything except trying to get my picture the way I wanted it.  No back problems to think about, no nothing.  What a glorious experience.  I have forgotten how good it feels to immerse yourself in something creative.

I have spent the better part of the past few years in constant pain and did not have the energy to “play” in my studio.  Now that I am on the mend, hopefully I can get back in there and learn to play again.  It is so freeing to create; what freedom.  It doesn’t matter what the final product is (OK, it is great if it turns out to be a masterpiece).  It is the process of doing and having fun that counts.

We had an evening of the Rat Pack – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.  Oh why [wailing and lots of moaning] couldn’t it have been the Beatles or Elvis or the Beach Boys.  I have nothing against the Rat Pack, but that is sooo 50s and I left my heart in the 60s.  Dinner consisted of Rat Pack favorites like salmon cakes and butternut squash and apple cider soup, but I could barely eat any of it – eewwww – although dessert was good.  I guess I better stop ordering the halibut.  They try to jazz it up with fancy sauces and seasonings; some things should just be done plain and simple.  We had an excellent evening with our dining companions, Gerald and Robin, and got to swap stories about our parents.

We went to the lounge show after dinner where the Rat Pack impersonators serenaded us with some of their hits.  There was one lady sitting in front of us that was putting on her own show by blowing kisses and kicking her legs while seated.  Robin and I spent most of the show watching her, smirking, and doing some eye-rolling because we were bored; however, the impersonators were kinda good.  Give us some 60s and 70s music!  Michael liked the show.

We got tomorrow’s escort assignments for Tonga.  I am disappointed I am not going to the beach.  More culture and sightseeing.

  1. Beverly,
I'm glad to hear you renewed some creative juices. It can definitely get your mind off pain and concerns when you immerse yourself in the project at hand. You did a great job! My sewing, crocheting and community involvements do the same for me. There is no time for boredom or self-pity. Keep it up! We may have a future "art master" in the making. Delores
